Jamel Brinkley's writing has appeared in The Best American Short Stories 2018, A Public Space, Tin House and elsewhere. He was a finalist for the National Book Award and won the 2018 Ernest J. Gaines Award. A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, he is currently a Wallace Stegner Fellow in Fiction at Stanford University and lives in California. A Lucky Man is his first book.

Beautifully written prose, in some parts of the book, almost poetic, but it is not, it's prose. The stories are very dark. I can't and don't want to tell this author what to. Undoubtedly, we will and should hear again from this talented writer, but next time, can you throw in a little "sky."

These stories dazzle with Brinkley’s massive talent. I absolutely loved each and every tender story. Inside the beautifully wrought sentences lie truths and insights that resonate with authentic elegance.
The author was my daughter’s professor at UW Madison and she has always speaked highly of him. He is an amazing writer, loved the book and short stories. His descriptivenesscreates a movie in your mind. Awesome book!Can’t wait for his next one.
